kk, faerie - thanks so much. i’m so glad to have you read the reviews, didn’t think anybody i knew was still here! doubt though that this will be a regular appearance. just felt like writing after ages. good to hear from you.
kk - seen the movie? heard the music?
vmshut - kk has explained wha...t vtv is - its an acronym for vinnay thandi varuvaaya, the tamil movie being reviewed.
no, i didn’t want to put up the synopsis of the movie, it’s been done here, and done well too, which is why i just touched upon bits of the plot and focussed instead on the kind of emotional impact the film had, on not just me, but the gang of cynics who had gone for the movie expecting some slick production with good music and bad acting.
if a director can connect with the audience, hey, hats off to him!Read More

I don't like simbu - I used to think the second half of his name should be replaced with the letters 'ian' i don't like trisha - she has enough wood in her expression to build a tharavadu. I went to watch vinnai thaandi varuvaaya because the movie was made by gautam menon - how wrong can a gvm m...Read more

it's great to have you writing again aruna! welcome back
i watched the movie the day after a very close friend of my son killed himself - no one knew why, but everybody speculated that it could be academic pressures- and it was heart rending to say the least.
even i wondered if there were really n...o other options - life's tough, oh well, kill yourself, seemed to be the subliminal message.
in spite of everything, the movie was still fairly enjoyable till the delivery by vacuum cleaner drama started. our movie makers really don't know how to stop when they are winning, do they!
anyway, it's good to have you back. please keep writing.

for everybody who's taken the time to read and write a comment here, thank you.
i've still got my octavia btw, times being what they are, no plans to change cars in the near future either.
if my car was any other, i'm sure i would have thought of it as being 'stuck' with an old rattler, but th...is car is still a pleasure to drive, and except for the odd wheeze and grumble, is still in pretty good shape.
if all cars from the skoda stable are made as good as this one, i would say the skoda is a fabulous buy!
enjoy your cars,

* excellent point made karthik. just last night i was talking to a friend about china's temerity to do what it has done, and about our refusal to stand up to it.

when we commit the sin of not exercising our right to vote, and we allow the government to be hijacked by those who dont care about anybody except themselves, and about anything other than power, we get the kind of government we have.
as for tibet. it is a sad struggle that could do with every s...ingle voice possible backing it. great write up ratna.

like you, i enjoyed JBJ, and was glad to find a positive review on the movie. viewers seem to have forgotten that 'farce' exists as a genre of comic theatre. in fact it is considered to be the oldest form of theatre where people aimed to entertain by making fun of another.
a farce is typically ...one where the characters & situations are exaggerated for the sake of humour. plot lines of course are very thin. farces evolved for a particular reason - to break free of the restrictions imposed by society, for people to express their anger and contempt for what passes off as accepted morals and societal mores, and to mock societys 'scared cows'
JBJ was a fairly well made and entertaining farce - it does not pretend to be highbrow comedy, or anything other than a simple entertainer. too bad the audience judged it by other yardsticks.
