Beating Layoffs

Posted on Mar 24, 2009 under General

Layoffs are part of the landscape these days; it's more surprising not to hear about a new round than to read the announcements.

Here is how to cope with that :

1) Read the signs :
If the company has laid off once, it means the tiger has tasted the human blood and once this is completed, it is now more likely to jump the company. As they say, love your job and not the company as you may never know when it stops loving you.

2) Beat The BS :
Post a layoff is the main BS time. For those who dont know what BS is .. it stands for the universal term for giving people some non-present imaginationland lollypop popularly known as BullS*it . The people who have not been laid off are scared and cant focuss on being the reular corporate slaves. Moreover the company is scared that this could spark a mass migration so they would feed you with all kinds of figures and statistics to tell you that the company is doing great and there is nothing to be worried about.

But the truth one has to remember is NO Company would retrench / lay off if it was doing well.

Another thing to remember is many copanies tell their employees that there was nothing to worry about. All the 100 employees who were retrenched were poor performers.

Well either the company's HR is really bad that they hired such weak people or like I said you are being fed a fresh batch of BS.

3) Workplace is a work Place :

One thing we all should remember is that a workplace is a workplace.
It is not a good place to start dating or to make a best friend and if you are to do so, you just might be risking your career because your best friend could sell you out for a promotion some day and rip your heart out.

SO I THINK IF WE FOLLOW THESE 3 Mantras, we should know the right time to change and stay safe.

If you however already have been laid off ... my suggestion, take a week's vacation, unwind and then start looking for a job after updating your resume.
