Three more years, no leaks no problems so far. Now I lost count of the number of years.

Looking at their US local call charges at $1.32 per minute I am not sure if it is value for money. I will have to call taxi or a friend. I know USA has a very primitive mobile phone business compared to even Indian standards. I would rather use this SIM card to only receive phone calls which comes f...ree. When you want to make outgoing phone calls use any of the cheap voip services like cheapvoip.com or justvoip.com See their rates which is a fraction of what these guys are charging. They also have a phone to phone call service with very clear billing. I have been using them for several years. If you are in Europe there are many cheap SIM cards to call India and local numbers - Lyca, Lebara, Vecton for example. Unlike in India, you do not need an ID proof to get a SIM. Just walk into any corner shop or supermarket and buy a SIM and minimum top up. That lasts for ever.Read More

Reviewed V-Guard Solar Water Heaters

Jan 22, 2014 08:25 AM 106746 Views

We decided to install a solar water heater. One thing I noticed at that time at a friends place was the high quality of materials used in the construction of V-Guard solar water heater. Another neighbor was complaining about the plastic outer shell of his cheap non V-Guard solar water heater ...Read more

Could you please quote the specifications of the heater? 39k should mean 200LPD or more.

The free electric heater coil costs only Rs 500. In India FPC and ETC will be same. We do not bother about efficiency here. A normal home is not constrained by area required for a panel on the roof. If the FPC is 60% as efficient as ETC, you will need 50% more FPC panel to heat same amount of water.... (do the math). So instead of having a 2sq meter ETC panel you will need 3sq meter. If 3 sq meter FPC panel costs less than 2sq meter ETC, efficiency has no meaning. We have lot of unused space on the roof for panels. I am looking for solar heaters under Rs10k. My Chinese friends tell me that solar heater costs only $100 to $200 (under Rs 10k) there. Why cant we?Read More

ETC is not required in India where the outside temperature does not drop so much (I am talking about sub zero). The heat lost in the night from the tank and panel is proportional to the higher powers of temperature difference between outside and inside the tank. ETC, because there is vaccum between ...outer and inner tubes, like a thermo flask, prevents heat loss in the night. In India it is not much temperature difference. Another option is to keep a bigger tank and maintain lower temperature inside. Anyway you are mixing it with cold water in the morning to bring it to bearable 40-50 degree. So flat panel heaters should work the same in that respect. Their claim of always perpendicular to the sunrays is also not correct as area perpendicular to sunrays is all that matter. I am waiting for Indian companies to make ETCs. Glass should be far cheaper than metal. But they are imported from China and costs much in packaging and transport. If they do not make it, I am going to make my own with my local mechanic friend. Hope we will make big business. Read More

Well, the cost involved in piping is understandable. Regarding the extra structure required for additional tank, you could use a pump with electronics to start it when the taps are open. Such pumps are used. They are very low power pumps. It would have saved some money. Regarding the evacuated glass... tubes, they are costlier than metal tubes since they are imported from China. In a warm climate like in India where outside temperature does not go very low, ETC/VTC is not required. Their claim of maximum exposure to sunlight is also eyewash. All that matters is the area of the solar heater panel which is perpendicular to the sunlight. In the evenings it will not be perpendicular if you are not turning it. (wiki solar tracking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_tracker) Therefore ETC will not be any better than flat panel in this respect. Basic Physics - Anyone who had a +2 course in physics can explain this to you especially he/she has heard of dot product. To me a few other things are important. The cost of 100 LPD insulated stainless steel tank should not be more than Rs. 5000. Glass tubes should be very cheap if manufactured in India. I do not understand why then they can not sell solar heaters under Rs10k like they do in China. I wish some local blacksmith/workshop mechanic start making it locally instead of big companies. It is a very simple technology quite well documented in internet.Read More
