Was just browsing through interbrand's latest top 100 global brands list and seeing NO Indian brand getting a mention there, I asked this question to myself....Do Indian brands really exist?
I know brand managers will pounce on me saying 'its early days for brands in India' but I somehow don't buy this. We seem to be overwhelmed by over-supply of phoren brands (even a dollar store is present in India now!). Do we really promote our brands in our own country?? I guess not...Lee cooper shoes somehow sneak their way to our shopping bag...rather than, lets say a shoe made by Metro shoe company!
But then who am I to say this all...after all I am wearing a citizen watch (made in japan, I flaunt!)...just a quick check on your own wardrobe (even the computer you read this on!) will give you answers...
I somehow feel compelled NOT to accept the fact that we don't have domestic brands...Nirma, Amul, lijjat papad etc. aren't bad by any measure...
A quick look at the list, and I could roughly get that approx 90% of the brands mentioned are already present in India...
Are we really doing enough to help Indian brands dominate GLOBALLY?? (after all going global is considered very sexy these days isn't it?)...
Thoughts/brick backs invited...
The interbrand list I am referring to can be found here..:
