Tata's have already designed a back up plan and producing nearly 100 units of Nano at their Pantnagar plant in Uttranchal. It makes logical sense for the TATA's to continue rolling out more units from this plant due the excise duty waiver which it enjoys for a period of 10 years. Tata's are currently producing ACE, which is a mini truck from this plant.
We can safely assume that TATA's might not be too keen to continue their venture at Singur. The ground reality is that Trade union strikes will definitely sabotage the future of Tata's. Further the economies of scale will not be viable to cart Nano from one remote corner of the country to another considering the location.
The trump card for TATA's is that they already possess the required 900 acres in Dharwad as clear title in their name. No wonder the minister concerned is wooing them to Karnataka. So much for the corporate transperancy of TATA's, we might see the announcement of pull out from TATA's. It is more so since Singur has become an ego problem between TMC and CPI rather than a issue of resettlement of farmers. All said and done we welcome TATA's to Karnataka, it is a sad loss for industrialisation of W Bengal.
