Nice review, but you missed some of the things.
First of all, there arent only the seven IITs whose entrance is through JEE, there is also ITBHU. Infact in the latest India Today rankings, ITBHU comes in above IIT Roorkee in rankings at 8th spto while IIT Roorkee doesnt even come in top 10.
Secondly, all the IITs are not same in acads, whatever the IITs may say themselves. IIT Kanpur & Bombay are the best in acads. Kharagpur has the best infrasructure. Others have pretty much the same characteristics as you say.
So the choice is really tough when choosing in the counselling, but the aspirants must have a clear cut idea what they want to do, then the choice wont be difficult.

PS: btw i am doing my engineering frm ITBHU final yr mech and i find the college much better than IIT Guwahati ( no infrasturcture, only IIT name ) and IIT roorkee

It gives me pleasure to write for new aspirants as many from my city only can contact me for my personal experiences. It’s good that I could write here for all freshers on this site.
Updating?? IIT madras has deers in campus for which two-wheeler petrol vehicle is banned since 2000 when my son joined IIT-Madras. We have to sign every yr.a guarantee on our part for not using vehicle next yr.
My son likes south Indian food and got lovely friends in campus too. Though initially it was language problem he could manage to say,’’ Yewalu, kiwalu.., tanni , suda-wada ...’’ right am I?? I listen such words in Madras train when I visit him.

Hi everybody newly visiting and revisiting,
Now, I can tell you about summer job to be undertaken just after students finish IIIrd yr.end-sem exam. They are given options to work at Madras Cos. with RECO. Or else Cos.of their own choice, at their hometown to enjoy vacation at home. Care this requires your own/family acquaintances. This they will have to finish within say 6/8 weeks with proper letter in prescribed format grading the performance by the Supervisor of the project (summer internship).
They need to reach back to IIT Madras to participate in placement process which may start by 20th July itself to grab maxi. no. of jobs. At this juncture students are given choice to opt for M.Tech degree as a second thought.

I wanted to add here for freshies that you will need bicycle to use in campus (can purchase used one from seniors) ,bed/ pillow (can get at
campus-shop), lock for room with three keys for room partners (first yr. three in one big room at IIT, Madras), lamp (according to your habit), One Thermas flask as Chennai is Hot. Other things depend on your habits..
They provide table chair (wooden) and steel old fashion bed with one plug with one addl.point for table lamp/taperecorder.
Near hostel area you will get phone booth/ cybercafe/ good canteen.
There is campus bus to reach to the gate with 15 min.frequency which is good feature at this IIT.
Will add here whenever I recollect the things.
