The state of the African community plunged deep into the depths of poverty bears an uncanny resemblance to the city of Mumbai... the sight of the slums that welcomes you when you at Mumbai airport and those that line the railway tracks. Every developing country is a replica of the other, woven toget...her into the fabric of poverty, threaded with despair. Mereillers uses a lot of vibrant colours-a measure which enhances the visual images the camera captures. Captivating scenes of colourful head bands wrapped over the head of sunken faces, eyes reflecting defeat, black figures draped with billowing African robes scurrying for cover from the hail of bullets from the band of armed dacoits that rob and ruin the tribal settlements, the sombre white doctors’ coats worn by black bodies, the massive mountains of Africa....he makes colour speak its own language. The film resonates in one’s mind even after the credits roll owing to the film’s haunting music. Alberto Iglesias the composer of the score, is well-renowned for his works like 'All About My Mother' 'Talk to her' and 'Live Flesh'.In the Constant Garedener, he excels with a composition that blends classical African folk with contemporary string instruments. The result is a beautiful ensemble of soothing music that haunts the viewer especially when coupled with the hard-hitting visuals of reality. An optimistic ending with justice delivered or the shield of pessimism at the futility of it all when seen in the context of lives lost, already a part of the forgotten past. With a tantalising plot, seasoned actors and brilliantly captured unconventional images, the Constant Gardener leaves you to sculpt your own perspective. Read More
