Are promises meant to be kept?

Jun 30, 2009 01:07 PM

Err... Not sure what line of mine you remembered? Don't look at me. I'm a deranged wild boar who writes when he's in his deepest deliriums so I can't possibly be expected to remember, right? ==DB== PS: Keeping promises is for people who're too lame to be Casanovas.

== God == Religion that is preached through threats of punishment, baits of reward or constant accusations of guilt is not sacred and it is the perfect weapon in the hands of Devil. God's own story

Apr 04, 2009 11:05 AM

Continued I know I should be making a diary post instead of a gigantic comment but scr*w that. There's a group in Pune that goes door to door to collect newspaper that people would normally sell to scrap pedlars. Their objective is to collect all the paper and give it away to recycling plants ...for free. What good does that do? It makes recycled paper cheap, ok, because the plants incur no cost in procuring raw material. But it puts scrap dealers out of business. Is that good, even slightly? They aren't rich dealers, the kind you exchange foreign currency with. And the paper then gets re-used for packaging or whatever. Our environmental concerns glow bright and red in such areas which hardly hurt us. But nothing really happens to switching off your car at a red signal. Or switching the air conditioner off at 3 AM and not turning it on till 9:30. Or using pure petrol in rickshaw engines. Or disposing garbage in the manner instructed by the municipality. I don't really know if you can appreciate this but this noisy, Western ape-sh*t called environmentalism is hurting the wallets of those who hardly have anything in it. Not rich corporations that employ them. ==DB==Read More

God's own story

Apr 04, 2009 10:59 AM (Updated Apr 04, 2009 11:00 AM)

Hi Arjun It is rather awkward adressing you thus (and of course, I was indiscreet enough not to ask for permission before doing so). My comment has little to do with your post, per se, but should make those rare individuals who read it think. I met with a guy from Greenpeace yesterday an...d he was talking about a ship called Clemencau or some such spelling. It was a French ship sent to a breaking yard off Mumbai’s cost. Greenpeace bullied our government into forcing it to be sent back to France because it contained 27000 tonnes of asbestos, which would have killed some fish. But think about it. A million dollar contract of dismantling a ship, which would employ 200 people, require material purchases and create a large chain of employment was sent back because some fish would die! There is a loud, often cantankerous lobby of environmentalists who aren’t letting terminals in Nhava Sheva expand because it will kill marine life or destroy mangroves. Sure, a few foul smelling marine plants will die. But imagine the kind of employment the terminal construction will generate, the sustainable employment the terminal operations will offer to the locals who’re right now earning 4k a month on an average selling fish and the commercial opportunities it will generate for the poor districts of south Maharashtra. But mangroves! Brilliantly important! You have numerous such things going on. Save those bees, save the trees... Save the whales and save those snails... At what cost, though? I think it is quite unnatural and even against God’s will for humans to turn against the poor lot in order to save the lives of other species. I thought we had the instinct to preserve our species. But this myopic brand of environmentalism is actually economic cannibalism, under the guise of activism all to prove some kind of point to someone who’s not listening. ==DB==Read More

CONTD III 3) What was the chief of the defense force doing with a paper-thin BPV at a relatively less sensitive zone when he should have been mobilizing and co-ordinating his response from an emergency control room? With my deepest respect for his martyrdom, he was not where he ought to have been. W...as he just overenthusiastic? Had he been ordered to go there exposing the city to the risk of rendering the ATS limp in the tragic event, which did occur? 4) Dead people don't need armed protection as much as living, potential victims of terror attacks. Do our police forces have no understanding of this obvious fact? 5) One can make the bold estimate that our definitive response was about 20hrs after the attack began. I suspect, we'll react to a communal remark by a Hindu-patron group much faster. (Speculative statements are permitted in conclusion if they are used purely for their metaphorical quality, without intending to distort statements of fact). Moral of this Post: We're very, very soft targets. We are slow, we are weak, we are timid. We're simply not good enough.Read More

Contd II Plausible Conclusions (based on observations of the same number): 1) We seem to have either an ill-trained police force or a force straddled with a cumbersome chain of bureaucratic command because of which we respond with hopeless speed. It takes 15 minutes for a police jeep to arrive ...at a minor road accident scene turned ugly brawl between two ruffians. It took about 1hr for policemen to secure the vicinities of high risk sites, 2 of which are high profile, highly sensitive locations even on normal days, namely the Oberoi-Trident and the Taj. 2) Our governments handle media irresponsibly and incompetently. It is not the purpose of this post to assign blame (I love to blame ourselves) but the media reporting of the events was irresponsible. The movements of armed forces to counter terrorists are national security concerns and cannot be revealed to the public at large unless the movements are a thing of the past (i.e. when knowing about those movements cannot affect their purpose in any way, 20 minutes later for example). You cannot name victims in a hotel-turned-hostage-site nor tell which room numbers they are hiding in. That is plain dumb.Read More

Observations This is an eyewitness account. Every single moment of action news channels covered from Nariman House was visible first hand from my balcony and from the terrace of my apartment complex. Observation 1 Apart from CST and immediately neighboring live zones such as Cama Hospital an...d Metro Cinema, the police responded to other live zones in about 45 minutes to 1 hr (duration not specifically measured or recorded). Observation 2 After about 07:30hrs, all news channel coverage came with a delay of 20minutes. Everything you saw on TV under the ''live'' banner had happened 20 minutes ago. Observation 3 The cheif of the ATS, presumably the law and order arm that was meant to provide the preliminary retaliation to the militant offensive, was already dead before the 3 crucial sites had been captured. Observation 4 There were more armed police around Leopold Cafe at 23:30hrs on 26.11.2008 than there were around Nariman House at the same time. Leopold had fallen silent at about 21:45hrs that night. Observation 5 No civilian was killed after circa 06:00hrs on 27.11.2008. Our response to flush out terrorists began several hours after the terrorists had decided to quite killing and to resort to frustrating the armed forces.Read More

edollsgomes There is a provision in the IPC to punish those who fail to co-operate at government security checks. These people can be detained for suspect activities. We don't have the will to use that provision. Imagine a celebrity refuses to be frisked at a five-star. Or the woman at the... shopping mall stubbornly refuses to let her bag get checked. And then the police book the celebrity or the woman for suspect activities. They spend a night in jail and are later discharged with a small fine and declared innocent. Imagine the media report. What is the most likely headline? ''Public harrassment in the name of Security'' ''The common man is not a terrorist'' Or-- ''Serves them right'' Think. When you see a protester next time, lodge a complaint with the police. Make some noise. Embarrass these people into compliance. It's not the government's fault. It's ours. It's our government. ==DB==Read More
